Elvish Singer Rehtaeh Conquering Tolkien Hearts at Spokane Convention
August 6th, 2010
It’s not Led Zepplin by any measure, but there is a secret music genre that pays tribute to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Hundreds of bands and musicians around the world have dedicated songs and entire albums to the vision of Middle-earth that Tolkien created.
One such artist is Heather Downing, who performs as the Elvish singer Rehtaeh. She takes her craft so seriously she has sought out the wisdom of masters of the Elven tongues to ensure her enunciations are acceptable to hard-core Tolkien fanatics. Most people would not know what to criticize, but pleasing that one eery fan in ten thousand who thinks he knows how Elvish music should sound is very important.
Rehtaeh was recently a guest on the pop Internet show Middle-earth Talk Radio, which boasts its own resident Tolkien scholar in cohost Michael Martinez. Martinez, who has written several books about Middle-earth, pummeled Downing with questions about her music, which includes titles such as “Aquatania” and “Elven Wedding Song”.
Middle-earth Talk Radio was kindled by Hawke Robinson, whose Tolkien interests manifest themselves mostly in role-playing games and music. He operates Middle-earthRadio.com, which boasts the Web’s largest collection of Tolkien-inspired music. Robinson is also pursuing an advanced degree in psychology by studying the therapeutic effects of role-playing games on children. His passion for RPGs is the driving force behind Tolkien Moot, a Spokane-area convention that brings Middle-earth gamers and scholars together for enlightened discourse (and some Orc-killing).
The next Tolkien Moot happens the weekend of August 13-15 and is open to the public, although RSVPs through the Website are appreciated. Rehtaeh will be the special guest at Tolkien Moot this year. They have scheduled three live performances that will be broadcast on the Web for fans around the world who cannot attend in person. The convention also features “Raw Hobbit”, a 1-on-1 talk show hosted by Martinez ala William Shatner and a livecast of Middle-earth Talk Radio.
