Tournaments Are Not the Time to Be Conservative

March 11th, 2010

Some poker players are just conservative players. There are the online poker players that project their chip stack above all else and would be absolutely outraged if you tried to get them to bluff. While ultra conservative play may be good at some times (like when you are trying to hold on to a few remaining dollars) it is definitely not suited to all environments. One of the places where conservative playing will never be profitable to you is the poker online tournament circuit. You will never end up at the final table if you only goal is to protect your chip stack. You need to aim higher and try to actually make money. Conservative play is doomed to failure at a tournament because the goal of a tournament is to end up with the biggest stack, not to stay in the game the longest. If you don’t build your stack aggressively you will be out of luck when it comes down to figuring out who ends in the money. You will not win a tournament unless you amass a stack that rivals your competitor’s. This means that you sometimes need to through caution to the wind and leave your conservative playing style to your home games.

Aces versus Aces

February 26th, 2010

Pocket aces, right? You’re a favorite against any other hand. Anybody that ends up beating you is going to have to suck out pretty, yes? You can say most any other hand is your favorite, but aces are statistically the hand you want to hold, and often the hand in any player’s repertoire that make them the most money.

Getting beat with aces hurts, sure, especially when you play them right and get them in good. Watching a player suck out on your aces when you’ve got money in will sting, but you can get over it. It’s part of the game, it’s poker. We have to learn to deal.

But what about the rare situation when you get all in with aces and find out you are up against aces? I think it’s only happened a few times in my poker online career, and usually it’s a laughing all in matter.

Out of those few times, the one time I still managed to lose the hand is still the one I can remember the most. Aces versus aces, he has hearts and clubs, and the flop comes all clubs. The turn is a club, too. And our sure-to-be split pot of $800 is pushing smiling over to him. He was a good friend too. The main word in that sentence would be was. Look out for these things when you play poker online.

Two Ways to Build a Bankroll

December 16th, 2009

There are two ways to build a bankroll for poker. The first, is the most traditional way. You start with a small base and work your way up the ladder to the higher stakes poker games. But this requires two things. First, that you play at a casino level that your bankroll can handle. Traditionally this is the equivalent of 20-30 buyins for a given level. So for 2NL you’d want about 60 bucks. This will offset the natural variance of the game and if you’re a winning player you’ll show a profit over the long run if you put in the hours. The second way is a little different. You don’t have to be a great player, or even a good player to build it this way you just have to be a little better than break even. It becomes essentially a poker savings account. You play, you win some, but mostly show little profit, but you get points and opportunity to the bigger tournaments and each payday that rolls around, you take some of your discretionary income and supplement your bankroll until you have one built big enough to play at the level your comfortable with. Now with this second method, it’s tougher to get a whole lot better at the game, but it does open doors to the higher levels. And from my own experience, a lot of people don’t like to start at the 2NL level and work up. Especially if they’ve been playing any live poker. Since live poker is usually a game with higher buy-ins, the second method may be best for these type of players to get to their desired stake level faster than grinding up the rungs.

A Five Suited Deck of Cards?

November 6th, 2009

We use the standard 52 card deck for so many different online poker and card games, that it is easy to assume that it has always been around. Or, even if you are willing to allow some changes to the classic deck of cards, these changes inevitably took place in the murky past. It is absolutely inconceivable to the modern poker player that the 52 card deck was actually being changed as late as 1937.

In 1937, many casinos came up with the idea of adding a fifth suit to the standard deck of online pokerplaying cards. A fifth suit would increase the overall number of cards in play, thus allowing more people to play a game at once. It would also further sway the odds in favor of the house. Some bold casinos even tried out this new deck on their gaming tables. It was not received well. Players were quick to note that it reduced their chances of winning while unfairly fattening the casino’s pockets. It was also judged impractical to implement on a wider scale because so many people would have to purchase new decks for home use. The five suited deck fell by the wayside, only to be remembered by the few poker players who care about the more absurd moments of recent poker history.

Playing at the Pub: Poker in the UK

September 25th, 2009

There is nothing better than relaxing with a pint at your local pub. Pubs are instantly relaxing, comfortable, and an excellent escape from the toils of everyday life. For British poker players, the pub can pose a conundrum. The pub is great, but what do you do if you want to relax with a pint AND an exciting game of poker. Luckily for all you British poker players out there, recent laws have changed the gambling rules in pubs. The sum of all this new legislation is that your local pub is now technically able to host a poker game with money in play. So if you and your mates like to hang out at the pub, you can add a poker game to your normal evening out. The one catch if you want to play poker at the pub is that you have to be the one to initiate the game. You have to ask your local barkeep if they would be willing to host the game, not the other way around. Individual pubs also reserve the right to not allow poker or other forms of gambling in their establishment. This isn’t a big hitch for dedicated poker players, but beginners out there may forget that they can combine a pint and poker.

Poker Terms: ‘Wheel’

August 21st, 2009

A ‘wheel’ in online poker refers to 5 card straight involving the numeric run of cards Ace 2 3 4 5. It is subsequently the lowest possible straight that can be made. Because of the possibility of making a wheel, casino hands like Ace 5 and Ace 4 are considered more valuable as drawing hands over hands like Ace 6 and Ace 7, as those former hands are capable of making a wheel, while the other two can not work together to make a straight. In ‘Razz,’ the wheel is considered the ultimate nuts, the best possible poker online hand in the game. If you have made a wheel, the worst you can do in a hand of razz is tie the pot. In ‘Omaha Hi Low,’ the wheel is also the best possible low hand, and will always win the low portion of the pot, again with the worst outcome that you would chop with anyone else who might have made a wheel. The wheel is doubly valuable in ‘Hi Low’ in that it simultaneously often the high hand as well (unless an opponent has made a better straight, a flush, or better), allowing the player who makes a wheel to ’scoop the pot,’ winning both the high and low.

July 28th, 2009

When taking part in the Spanish Lotto with Virtual World Direct you can be confident that you will be in very capable hands. My estimate is that Virtual World Direct (vwd) is amongst largest purchasers of lottery syndicate tickets; if they are not the largest Spanish lottery ticket buyer.

They have over two hundred thousand paying customers taking part in the Euro Millions, UK lotto and the Spanish lottery of which the Spanish lotto is presumably going to be the largest lottery syndicate. Founded in 2002 and a long standing member of the lottery council they have all the credibly that is required, also a excellent track record.

To play in a lottery syndicate you pay £5.00 a week for the UK Lotto and the Euro lottery with the Spanish Lotto costing £20 per four week cycle (Only monthly subscriptions). Being part of a lottery syndicate obviously shrinks your particular share but increases your prospects of winning and because of the unique way the lotto numbers are formulated the odds of winning is increased still further!

The business opportunity is another produced Virtual-world-direct provides and now they have dropped the signing up fee plus the annual subscriptions so that anybody interest in getting an extra income will capitalise. The way it operates is if an affiliate introduces a player to any of Euro Millions, UK lotto or the Spanish lotto syndicates, virtual-world-direct will give that affiliate twenty per cent of that players subscription, also, if that player decides to become an affiliate, the affiliate that introduced them will have five % of that player/affiliates earning, down to level 7. Global revenue is another incentive that rewards affiliates that reach a minimum level within elottery with a percentage of the companys worldwide income.

Poker Slang: ‘Canadian Straight’

July 17th, 2009

Among the many varieties of slang names for different kinds of poker hands, the ‘Canadian Straight,’ might be the one I like best. A Canadian straight occurs when a poker online player has three pairs (i.e. he has paired both his hole cards and there is a pair on board), which in reality, in the terms of most poker games, is just the same as two pair.

I’ve found that you can add a little spice to your home game by making the Canadian straight a true and viable hand to play. It still doesn’t beat trips, but if you let three pair beat two pair (even when the other two pair is of a higher value) can add a little extra flair and fun to the game, if your table is willing to be playful.

Probably not recommended for games with big money or where the players don’t know each other that well, but in the right group, it can be fun to mess with cards values and rankings for new results in the mix.

For even better results, having the whole table take a shot of straight whiskey when a player shows up a with Canadian straight is even more money in the bag.

Playing against the House

May 7th, 2009

Sometimes, especially early in the night, the proprietor of the poker club will sit in the cash game and play. What are his motivations? Is he trying to help get the game started? Does he want poker online to be able to win some of the money back that they are paying in rake? Maybe his hosting a game is just a way of guaranteeing him a spot to play instead of just a money-making scheme. Let’s look at this:

First of all, you have to find out if the money he is playing with is different than the house’s bank. If he loses a big poker hand and dips into the bank for a re-load, it could feel like he’s playing with an unlimited bankroll. This may not be a bad thing, however. If he’s dipping into the bank for his gambling funds, it must mean that he is losing. But, even a losing player with an unlimited bankroll will get paid once in a while. But, is he gambling more because he can afford the losses?

Lots of time the host knows the pace of the game, after all it is his place. If he drops a few hundred early on, will he quit knowing his players will stay late and are likely to lose it back, or will he stand up and let the money play? His playing big gamble pots early in the night might also act as a way to instigate big-pot poker to the other players. If the players get a little looser, he’s probably going to make max-rake on most of the hands. This is also the case if some of the players have more money than they are used to having on the table. With a few hundred extra in circulation on the table, the players might make more calls, and bigger plays. Action is the house’s best friend.

Other times, the host is really just looking to play poker, and a game at his home is a great way for him to get action without traveling to a casino. His heart might not be set on getting max rake all the time, but having a good environment to play cards in. If the host is a player, you’re likely to have a square game. But, every host has the advantage of house-money at their disposal. If they lose, they should have money on hand to rebuy with, making them unlikely to quit; also making them one of the more reliable players at a game.

Other Poker Games worth Playing

October 8th, 2008

Texas Holdem is great, there’s not doubt about that, but there are other variations that are loads of fun as well, and knowing how to play poker variants will separate you from the newbies who saw Hold ‘Em on ESPN and want to jump on the bandwagon.

7 card stud is a poker game that’ll make you a player.

Let’s look at some of the more obvious points of the game. Seven card stud entails you having seven cards to make the best five card hand with, and stud means that you can’t draw any more cards-you’re stuck with what you’ve got. No community cards here, either-you’re on your own.

It starts to get tricky with the deal, but follow along-the dealer hands out two cards face down to each player, then a card face up. A round of betting follows (each round of betting starts with the player who has the best hand with the cards he’s showing). This is followed by a round of betting, and then another card is dealt face up, then another round of betting, and another card face up. Another round, and then a fourth card face up. Finally one last card is dealt face down, and the last round of betting ensues.

It’s pretty intense, and it’s a great way to throw some variety into your gaming. Give it a shot.
